In the summer of 2006, this class was taught as part of Rual China Education Foundation(RCEF) summer program at Dongbaoquan Village in Hubei Province, China. The class was offered to two groups of students: a elementary school group from Grade five to Grade Six (aged 11-12, around 30 people) and a junior high school group from Grade 1 to Grade 2 (aged12-14, over 20 people). Students shared about who they were or who they wanted to be through self-portraits. They enjoyed the field trip to a river bed near their village and did drawings about the place based on their observation. They practiced visualizing the verbal discription of poetry through drawing. The elementary school drew a map of their village as the final project. Most of the students in thejunior high school group participated in the community research training and the folk story collecting. Three five-student teams successfully finished their storybooks. Each of these students got a black-and-white copy of the storybooks they drew. They also gave a copy of the storybooks to the elders who told them the stories. RCEF plans to further develop this class as part of their summer program yearly. If you are interested, you can red the report of the class.
